1/4 mile speed tests

Stock ZZ (Bonspeed Ford), no body, no front tires, 3 good runs.

Red axle, and gear set used for all tests.

Red Motor:

3.610 @ 4.29 MPH / 3.90 AVG MPH
3.462 @ 5.17 MPH / 4.06 AVG MPH
3.515 @ 4.58 MPH / 4.00 AVG MPH

Yellow Motor:

3.727 @ 4.18 MPH / 3.77 AVG MPH
3.684 @ 4.29 MPH / 3.82 AVG MPH
3.599 @ 4.29 MPH / 3.91 AVG MPH

Orange Motor:

2.915 @ 5.83 MPH / 4.82 AVG MPH
2.914 @ 5.78 MPH / 4.83 AVG MPH
2.861 @ 5.83 MPH / 4.92 AVG MPH

Purple Motor:

2.925 / 4.81 AVG MPH
2.961 / 4.75 AVG MPH
2.975 / 4.73 AVG MPH

I did the same tests with an SE and had less traction problems off the line, I'm guessing because of weight. I used the same rear tires, but the standard ZZ broke loose more often, especially with the yellow and orange motors. I'm pretty sure that's why the red motor produced better numbers.

EDIT: I did some more testing, and I think the top speed numbers I've been getting are not very accurate. The timer resolution isn't high enough to properly guage speed across the short 1 foot trap. The highest I've ever seen it go is 6.75 MPH, which is roughly .100s. The software won't register times below that. Which means, I need to lengthen the speed trap distance, but I don't think that those numbers would mean much either as I think the cars might still be accellerating at 17, 18 or even 19' down the track. SO, I've decided just to do away with the speed trap at the end of the track. For my purposes, it's really only the ETA that matters. For future testing, top speed numbers won't be available. As for the numbers already posted, I'll leave them there, just don't take too much stock in them.

modified testing

I performed a PCB mod in which you remove two resistors (R16,R19), which was supposed to increase torque and speed, well, it didn't. It almost halved my speed, though torque was slightly increased. So I put the R19 resistor back on and was back up to speed again.

I also did the No-Reverse mod by directly connecting the yellow motor wire to the positive side of the battery. BINGO! Increase in both accelleration and top speed.

Orange motor, red axel, red gears, no body, no front tires.

2.721 @ 5.98 MPH / 5.17 AVG MPH
2.719 @ 5.98 MPH / 5.17 AVG MPH
2.726 @ 5.93 MPH / 5.16 AVG MPH

As you can see, only slightly faster, but the car gained 2/10'ths on its ETA.

Right now, it's a few tenths slower than an SE with the yellow motor, but the SE has twice the voltage. Time to make things even and see what happens.

EDIT: 2/17/06

2 CELL ZZ (with No-Reverse Mod).

Orange motor, red axel, red gears, no body, no front tires.

2.464 / 5.71 AVG MPH
2.450 / 5.74 AVG MPH
2.530 / 5.56 AVG MPH

Purple Motor, red axel, red gears, no body, no front tires.

2.399 / 5.87 AVG MPH
2.526 / 5.27 AVG MPH
2.547 / 5.52 AVG MPH

AND there it is. A standard ZZ with two cells and a "no reverse mod" is almost dead even with a stock SE, maybe even a little quicker.

The difference between the orange and purple motors is negligible. I'd even go so far to say that the orange motor is more consistent, and less susceptable to battery voltage changes. I don't think two cells is enough to really push the purple motor. With a very fresh triple charge, the purple motor might have an advantage, but that advantage is quickly lost, about 1 trip down the strip, before performance really drops off.
