Fried PCB with Lipos - plz help!

Okay electronics/ pcb pros... i need your help. first of all this is clearly NOT an XMOD board but I am trying to learn before i do work on my XMOD. It is just a practice car from Walmart with no speed control (no proportional anyway).
This board takes 3 cells (4.5v). I wired up 5 cells (7.5v) and it ran with no problems. I then hooked up a 7.4 Lipo to this board and it worked for a bit... then forward blew. Then reverse blew. Then the steering blew. (I should mention that while installing the lipo I soldered the positive and negative battery connectors directly to the board without using the on/off switch- I did have the on/off switch with the 5 cell setup). The MOTORS ARE FINE (I checked the drive and servo motor and they are not damaged).
so here's the Qs:
1) This board doesn't appear to have FET chip/s. Is it true that if you run to many volts through an XMOD or too hot of a motor with a lot of amp draw it is the FETS that blow?
2) If this board does not have FETs, what blew on the board that stopped it from working? How do I find out?
3) Does anybody know (or have the time and patience) to explain what the doodads on the board are and do (especially the plethora of black things that stick up), or direct me to a site that explains it?
Here are the post-blow pics:

THANKS!!!!
