Post ABC DTM X-4, details

DTM X-4
---------------
The DTM X-4 is a 1/24-scale 4wd RC car kit. This kit is a little more complicated to assemble because is has A LOT more parts than the DTM-SP. The chassis is made of one pieces of flat 2mm black fiberglass. Most of the rest of the pieces and the upper-deck are made of black nylon. This is a shaft driven 4wd system with ball differentials in the front and rear. The car is fairly rigid with very little suspension. Instead of front u-joints (as in a Micro RS4 and Min-X), keyed axle and hubs are used in the front. The keyed axles work like a ball Allen wrench does on an angle. The motor is mounted high on the chassis directly above the center shaft. The battery pack fits in a holder on one side of the car. Six 1/3 size AA’s can be used as a battery pack or one can be purchased from ABC Hobbies. The wheels are made of white plastic with all 4 hubs being machined pieces of aluminum. All four tires are the same width. The bushings that are included with the kit are plastic.

What do you need besides the kit?
----------------------------------------------
All electronics:
Controller (Radio)
Small Receiver
Micro or mini Servo
VERY Small ESC capable of 6cells (electronic speed controller)
Battery pack (may be purchased separately from ABC Hobbies SNALLER THAN THE DTM SP)

AND

Charger (if you have one for your 1/10 scale car it may work if you can set the amps)
Clear lexan body
Polycarbonate paint (for the body )

Modifications:
-------------------
The wheelbase has 3 lengths that can be set. The chassis can accept long motors (180 size) as found in an Micro RS4. Many spur gear and pinion gears are available. 3 different compounds of foam tires are available. A few different wheel styles are also available. A foam bumper is optional (I would suggest getting one). I would also recommend ball bearings as a worthwhile upgrade. Lots of different bodies are available.

One finial note, I did not have good luck with the electronics ABC hobbies sells to go along with the DTM X-4. Yes it fits BUT the speed controller sucks (setting it was VERY difficult) and glitching was always a problem. Also the servo is hard wired to the combo speed controller receiver. Their are replacement servo gears availble BUT not from Horrizon hobby.

Here is a picture of the bare chassis of the DTM x-4. Optional equipment pictured is the blue foam bumper. The chassis is setup so the batteries need to be balanced by ALL the electronics (except the motor which is above).

Suspension explained

In the center is the motor, underneath is the drive shaft. The top deck is semi "floating" with all joints being soft. This is really all the suspension the car has: note the sping near the front of the car and "floating" disk at the rear. The motor is bolted to the rear bulkhead which is bolted rigidly to the chassis. The upperdeck is not connected in anyway to the motor or rear bulkhead.

There is NO flex joint built in anywhere between the front arms and the chassis. The front-end bits are mounted rigidly to the chassis.

More pictures of the chassis with and with out electronics can be found at Gertman's Album

Sure,

I'am going to add more later and also beef up my X4 gallery with detailed descriptions of each picture.

Hey Gertman,

Your DTM looks very nice. I have been thinking on getting one as well. Currently, I have micro rs4 and mini-z. Also, M-24 MID is on order and expected the arrival next week. Does X4 fit mini-z body without drilling holes? How about static 1/24 model? I really don't want any holes on the body if possible. Any info will be appreciated. Here is my mini-z Netz Altezza.

Nice body,

BUT sorry, Mini-Z bodies are MUCH smaller than DTM-X4 bodies. Remember your Mini-Z is 1-28 scale, and the X4 is 1:24.

As far as any/all 1:24 scale plastic bodies fitting, some do and some don't. You just need to match up the wheel wells.
