Digi Q Sound Tower

Just received the Digi Q Sound Tower w/sound cards, and two new revolving turret tanks. As soon as time allows, will post info about how well it works. For now . . .

The tower and sound cards appear to be very high quality.
Power for the tower is supplied by 4 AA cells, which are installed in the base, via a hatch on the bottom. There is no power jack for a DC supply, that is a dissappointment. Guess that will be the first mod for this one.
The IR receiver is built in to the top of the housing. An RCA/Phono jack output is provided on the back of the tower. This can be connected to the input of a sound system, boom box, whatever, using a standard audio cable. The sound will be mono only.
Of course, all the instructions are in Japanese. The operation looks straight forward, though.

Questions that will be answered.
How do you set up the system? (in English)
Does it work with the non-turret revolving tanks and the older controllers?
Does it work well with four tanks simultaneously?

Answers are just around the corner.

Hi, alard. I also bought the sound tower about 2 weeks ago. You are right about it being high quality and the no dc input is a letdown, but It just makes the battle so much better and more realistic. I already have made...yeah thats right made 4 seperate speaker systems with amplifiers to hook into the back of the system. They are mounted in my battlefield in the making and work like a charm, and of course you have to have sound adjustment so mine is not mono anymore. We will have to write a joint reveiw. What ya say? AIM screename?

Sound tower reports

Got a chance to try out the Sound Tower last night. These are preliminary results, based on my first impressions.

First, to get around wasting AA cells, a regulated 6VDC 1amp wall wart supply was connected to the the battery terminals.

To set up the unit:
Make sure that the power switch is in the off position.
Plug in the Digi Q combat sound cards, one for each tank.
Turn on the power switch. The LED on the front of the tower will glow.
Turn on each tank controller and initialize each tank, one at a time. As each tank is initialized, be sure that the Sound tower IR receiver also receives the beam from the controller. As you turn on each controller, you will hear the sound of each tank engine being started. Now you are ready to roll.

There are seven sounds that the tower will play for each tank:
engine start, engine idle, accelerating, full power running, decelerating/stopping, turret traverse, cannon fire.

This unit adds remarkable new dimension to driving the tanks.
The tower is surprisingly loud and clear, even with the volume set to about half. The sounds of the tracks/engine and the turret traverse are realistic enough. The tracks squeak, the turret traverse sounds very 'hydraulic'. So far, I have observed three distinct engine/cannon sound patterns.
The Tiger and Panther seem to sound the same.
The Sherman and T34 also seem to share the same sounds.
The JGDSF74, has it's own sounds.
I don't have a type 90 to test.
As for the turret traverse sounds, I only have the T34 and Panther revolvers. Both have different turret sounds, and are very cool.
Incidentally, the new revolvers seem to have slightly better quality than the other tanks. The treads are a bit better, the motors more consistent. Dissapointed that the drive wheels don't have the same serrations as the Sherman and the Tiger, though.

All in all, it is an excellent addition to the Combat Digi Q experience. Hearing the cannon fire while the tank recoils simultaneously is excellent.

Kind of expensive, though!

Boom!

Any questions?

Great stuff Alard, thanks.

You mentioned "Plug in the Digi Q combat sound cards, one for each tank." Do all the sounds cards come with the tower? Do you have to buy each one? What's the deal there?

Very cool stuff!

Digi Q sound cards

The cards have to be purchased seperately.

It looks like there are three different sound cards.
Digi Q combat
F1 Racing
Godzilla/Monsters

You need one card for each ID.

There is a sound sample of Godzilla and tanks somewhere on the Konami site.

Break it down for us Alard, what were the costs on the items (Sound Tower, sound cards, etc...).

I found the sample sound, but this page is better because it has video of the new Godzilla/Monsters and all I have to say is...Godzilla is COOL!

Expensive Sound system

Buy it now prices on Ebay.

new controller $27.00
T-34 rotating turret type $39.00
Digi-Q Sound tower $42.00
Combat Digi Q Sound cards $15.00 each

That's right, a complete sound system for four tanks is $102

Right now you can get the Godzilla/monster sound card on Ebay for $20.
Godzilla is available for $54 including the controller. These prices will no doubt decrease a little after a while.

Using the sound tower, fighting Godzilla with multiple tanks is bound to be a gas.

The Sound Tower is a unit, by itself and has 4 empty slots in the back.

For each Tank (or any of the Godzilla Series combat units) you need 1 sound card. Then each sound card has to be synced-up to the Tank and from then on it will read the signals between the tank and controller and make the appropriate sounds.

You can see pictures of the Sound Tower/Card here:
