My kid still plays with the HW XV Racers I got him a couple of years ago. The XV's were like the KITT racers, except they didn't have interchangeable bodies/motors/gears. They have an internal NiCd that charges on a base w/2AA batteries (no timer). No racing here, the cars just loop around the track for 20 seconds or so, but he finds them entertaining.
The KITT racers look like miniature copies of the Tamiya mini 4WD cars in Japan. I heard a couple of years ago that the mini 4WD craze was eating up more than half of Japan's AA batteries!
I hope that the KITT racers become popular here in the states, to keep our cheap supply of motors and batteries! Mattel is going to wonder why they sell tons of cars, and very few playsets......
And mini-RC fans are going to have to figure out what they can do with a 30 second mechanical timer. I think that free flight airplane enthusiast may have a use for them as fuel cutoffs for their engines.......
