My dad and I found these about 1 inch wide 60" long tin strips (found in the dryer vent aisle at home depot) and they work wonderfully as a track border.. its $3 for 60"
it is bendable (and you can unbend the bends with no problem) and you could cut it as well. it works very well for us. it's nice to have a reconfigurable track and these work wonderfully. we bought 4 of them and actually want to get more. i'll post some pics when i get home.
Actually if you hound the local RS stores here you will find some stuff every week. I know what you're saying though.
And about the cone/barrel sets
I like autocrossing my real cars, so I am used to the cones and barrels (okay, we never use barrels but they're enough like cones for me). That's why I bought 5 whole sets of 'em. Seems to be enough for a nice autocross course in the kitchen, server room, etc.
