The drive shaft serves two purposes as far as I can see. The first is to transfer power to the front wheels when using AWD (obviously). The second is important for AWD and RWD, it gives structural strength. If you use something that's not rigid, then the only thing that's supporting the car is those two screws...not a great idea.
