260 motors: Finding that perfect combo

Anybody who is attempting to fit a 260 motor should note that it is not a simple drop-in setup like the 180s are. What boxcrash has done is pretty much what I had in mind for mounting. At this point, I haven't even begun to deal with mounting.. I'm trying to build my ideal motor first.

As for the 20 tooth pinion, that's a little bigger than I want to go. Ideally, I'd like to keep the motor as low as possible in the chassis. Do they have smaller pinions that will work, like a 15 or 16 tooth?

The same company makes a white nylon 16 tooth that is meant to fit on the 130 and 180 shaft size. Its about 9 mm in diameter. I haven't tried it because the pitch seemed small. I'll try it tonight. It kinda matches up with the xmode shaft gear. They only cost 97 cents at the local electronics store. Here's a picture.

It did not seem to twist the rear end, but that might explain the reason it won't trim out the steering.

I imagine I could fabricate the bracket so it would fit or construct a bracket to acheive the same stability and flex control.
Or possibly make it screw to the body somehow using the posts or something.

Usualy my tires spin before gripping anyhow.

Yeah I used a 10 tooth solder on Slot Car pinion there, but it broke the solder and the pinion would not spin, but the motor output shaft would, thus no driving force.
So I have since pressed the 11 tooth on because I tried a Hpi pinion on the motor and it would not work, the motor is larger so it has to sit closer to the bevel gear. The allen set screw would interfere with the rotational contact of the pinion on the bevel.
Heck even on the 130's I have to flip the 13t around.

When I put in the Elite Motor and the 20 tooth pinion I tried it without the rear brace and the car was useless for anythhing but donuts. I ended up using the original brace and modifying to fit over the higher motor mount needed for the big pinion. Although this raised the center of gravity, the top speed is amazing. Inverting the wheels and stiffer springs helped the center of gravity. I used blue springs on the motor mount becuase they looked cool.

Hmm I might have to try that but my car does fine unless I crack the throttle wide open all at once.

It goes pretty straight most of the time.

Every now and then it wants to veer right.

I dunno if I should put this in here or not, but oh well. You were talking about the Team Orion elite stock motor, right? I have a stock supra that I want to put a different motor in, but I have no clue which one to buy for it. I'm thinking of the elite stock motor ($9.95) but I"m not sure. I know that NML said that if people were on a budget to buy a motor that I cant think of off the top of my head.. I know it was from hobby people and it was like $5. If I do buy that team orion motor, will I have to do anything to it internally? Or just solder the wires and resistors onto it and plug it in.. If I dont have to, I dont want to take the motor I buy apart. and I figure it'd be cheaper to buy the orion motor instead of building an SB hybrid. Cuz the s2 upgrade cit is like $16 and a spinbrush is like $6, so if I can get away with buying a motor thats already put together I will. Thanks for reading!

KennyD, you're going to get as many recomendations as there people are people on this forum. I like the Orion Stock Elite because of the torque and because I don't want to take anything apart and mess with it if I don't have to. I just change the motor connector and go. I have one with a 20 tooth pinion, one with a 13 and one with a 9 and they all work great. I don't do drag racing, only road courses and my car is faster than most other Xmods I race and keeps up with most Mini-Zs just fine. It goes fast enough so that good technique will put it out front.

Alright, thanks. If I buy the team orion elite stock motor from wherever I can find it, how many teeth will it have and how will it compare with the other after-market motors I could buy? Like I said earler (I think I said it..) I only have a stock xmod with the stock motor. Thanks in advance.

I just ordered this motor from Tower Hobbies. Their's doesn't come with a pinion on it, and I'm fairly certain that's what you can expect in other places.

If memory serves, Neuro said that this motor had timing advance for the MiniZ, which means timing retarded for the Xmod. It will still work, but to get the most out of the motor, you'll have to adjust the timing.

Neuro, can you confirm this?

Team Orion Elite stock motor has neutral timing. It's the GPM modified that has advanced timing in the wrong direction.

Tonka have you tried that 16 tooth pinion yet??

Also if it works where can you get those??
I do not have a local electronics store other than RS.

That nylon 16 tooth pinion doesn't work. The pitch is wrong. Another thing I found out about the 30 tooth pinion is that it really makes the 180 motor work. With an 11 tooth, that motor doesn't really get hot, but with the 30 tooth, it gets almost too hot to touch.
