yeah, i've tried doing it, but i hit some problems (see thread in xmods section on extended axels). To tell the truth, it depends on what you want to do that dictates how you need to mod. big tires destroy your torque, so i would recommend using a Spinbrush motor at least. just the tires and the motor will get you to run on sand or Very small gravel. anything bigger will catch the bottom of your car and it will sit there and happily spin its wheels.
if you want to hit large gravel, rock-crawl or hill climb, big tires area must, and maybe a fet mod and definitely a VERY torquey motor. I will be using a Cassete player motor. (only about 3000 rpm, but more torque than you know what to do with, runs on stock fets.)
i have a Plate lsd in the back and the ball in the front with the big tires and a SB motor. i was working on a new susp. to get about 1" of ride, which would be suitable for climbing or big gravel, but it sorta died. (again, see my other thread.)
i think if you want to waterproof it, you could just wrap up in ceram wrap, letting the wheels out through little holes. cheap but better than nothing. dust is not much of an issue, just clean it out after every use. hope i helped
