Go get this motor
For anyone out there thats trying to get more out of there XMOD then look no further than the Megatech modified motors for the mini z's. I went and picked one up from my LHS (checkered flag here in st louis) and installed it yesterday. I dont know how well the NML and stage 10 motors are but this little baby has gotta be at least a stage 4.
It's whole lot faster than any of the stage 2 motors by being rated as a high torque high speed motor. Only cost me 20 bucks and then another 7 bucks for some new pinion gears.
Just clip one of the connectors off your old motor and install it on the new one. the heat sink fits and the little yellow brace on the back fits as well. And you can order one of these from Tower Hobbies , they offer three types, high torque, high speed, and high torque / high speed.

My friend has this motor in his Mini-Z..... I'm thinking about trying it.

I just did a seach to see if anyone else had tried this motor and I saw a few people talking about needing a FET upgrade or turbo for it. Well, I've ran my X-MOD for at least an hour or more at race speeds and its been fine. Cant wait to see how it will be after I add 2 more cells

anyone tried it for more than an hour. and is $20 a base price and varies from dealer or is that the price no matter where u get it?

I really don't know how much load the x-mod can take before frying, but the ock stmini-z can't handle that motor. Note, it may not burn out immediately. I was reading yesterday about people using PN Speedy practice motors, as they are non-turbo, and they still eventually burnt the fets on Mini-Zs, some burning in minutes after constant repairs, and others burning after 2 weeks. It makes me worry about my mini-z 130-a-bb motor, which is rumoured to burn a few fets on Mini-zs, which is on my mr-02. The NML hand wound motors, which are quite expensive let me remind you, have such a high draw that regular fet and single turbos on a mini-z can't withstand that power. Dual turbos or special fet stacks are needed. But that is the mini-z motor, it seems like NML has projects going on for the x-mod and it may result in a different motor being released for the x-mod. What I am trying to get to here is, that megatech motor MIGHT fry your fets after some time even if it still works for now. I honestly don't know if adding an extra cell affects this, but I think it does. If you are on a tight-budget and can't afford to risk your x-mod, I'd hold off. If you got some cash though, hey its not a terribly expensive car if you do fry it.

From what you are saying it kinda sounds like the Xmods can handle less turns in motors then the Mini-z's. Maybe the Xmods already have good FET's on them. I might try to hand wind a motor as soon as I can get the pinon gear off of my stage 1 motor. I have a feeling it can hold about 33 or so winds.

The x-mods might be able to, no doubt about it. They seem to handle the extra power better than stock mini-zs. I also heard some ideas that the x-mod might have some kind of breaker to prevent overloading.

The XMODS do have large metal heat sinks on the FETs... And I have yet to hear of anyone burning one out.

i think someone has. and i also read that someone took theirs all apart and had to put more thermal electric grease on them.
