My motor blew up!

I think the brushes went bad on my 2.2 motor, it suddenly went really slow, about half it's normal speed, then it just died.

I took it apart, and bent what was left of the brushes back into shape, and it sort of runs now, had the endcap 180 deg out of sync (ran backwards), (I guess this means it could be possible to change the timing on these little things???)

What really stings me, is the fact this was a fairly new motor (I didn't even reach 2 hours of total runs! -and I never ran more than 1 cell too!
So I really need a new motor, either a 2.2 or maybe a 2.6... Something that won't just up and DIE on me.

I want torque more than top speed, so I think I should get a 2.6, but I don't know what manufacturer is best (ie not DOA)
Any suggestions?

You know I noticed that my 3.0 engine seems to run faster in reverse than it does forward. I wonder if that could be a timing issue?!

I bought a microsizer 2.6 motor from Cellar Dweller, in Winipeg, and am having some "issues" with it... It has almost no torque, and I have to push start my Z-car to get it going. I had to put a piece of paper behind the piece of metal that touches the tab on the motor, and that didn't do much better. This hobby store charged me almost as much as what I bought the car for!

You'd think for 15.00, they'd sell you a GOOD motor!

Wow, $15 is ridiculous for a 2.6 motor. I paid $9 including shipping for a 3.0 Z-car motor! And I believe Tiny sells the 3.8 for like $11 plus shipping!

I can't return it, so I took it apart -(the dud micro sizer 2.6)
It looks well built inside, has nice strong brushes, and the armature looks like a micro-sized 540 type (not hollow wire spool).

The problem seems like "dead spots" or poor brush contact, I've had it apart a few times, checked everything out, and still it runs like $#!T.

I thought it wasn't getting enough current, so I connected it directly to one AA cell---no difference. If I put power to it and slowly turn it with my fingers, I definitely feel little "kicks" like it wants to run, but it wont start on its own.

I'll let you know if I ever sort this one out

It is most likely dead spots for sure.. I had the same problem with a few 15$ ebay clones. They ran fine and then i would wake up in the morning and it ran like pooh. I guess its like anything really... you get some good ones and some bad ones.. with the way they are selling especially this time of year, that probably didnt help either!

I got me some 2.6s with a gearset, pair of tires, and a Tomy battery for $1.98 each. Thats $1.98 for a motor, gearset, pair of tires, and battery.

And they're all authentic Tomy parts.

I got that same deal for $1.98, but the gears don't quite match. The motor and tires work, but the rear axle is not wide enough and the idler gear isn't big enough.

I now think the problem was not dead spots, but moments of exessive current draw. Run time gets cut in half, Z-car has trouble giving power to it, but a thor clone sometimes gets it to run decently. This motor drains the battery faster in any car I put it in.

Run time with a Z car charged twice was 8 mins (stock 2.2 Z motor), and 4 to 5 mins with the 2.6 Bit motor.
Since I've only tried one motor, I'm not sure If all motors act like this when used in Z-cars, or I jus happened to get a dud

Sounds like you got a dud. I have a 3.0 motor from the Z-car upgrade kit and it does great!

I bought some KIT racers for the motors to use in my Z-cars. They wouldn't work. I thought they were defective until I tried them in a Bit -- and they worked perfectly. Much later I tried them in a Zip. Again it worked well (although the run time was diminished).

there's a guy on 1 of the threads that had a problem getting his 3.8 to run. he sprayed WD40 on it and kinda worked it in, and viola. it worked. i tried it on some of my noisy stiff motors. now they are quieter, and faster than i could believe. i made 3 crappy motors into 3 of my best motors. the torque is unbelievable. now my 2.2 runs like a 2.6, 2.6 runs like a bat outa hell, and my 3.0 has the same torque as the 2.2.

what do you spray on the motor? And where on the motor?

WD40. you spray it right into the shaft.put the shaft right up to the nozzle and spray it a couple times. then you work it in by pulling the shaft back and forth while turning it with your fingers. let it sit for a minute or so, wipe it off , replace the pinion gear, and run it for awhile. it should make some difference.
