Bearings - Tiny vs. Atomic
i'm about to buy a bearing set but i can't decide which set to get the TinyRC set or the AtomicMods set.
The AM's set gives me alot more info on the bearings themselves - they are sealed, and come with two sizes to reduce slop with enough to fit in the AWD or RWD. - $29.xx
The Tiny bearings are the dry type (not sure if AM are), not sure of exact size. - $27.xx
which do you think are the better choice. Any success/failure stories?
Also - the little spacers found on AM are a great idea but they are way to much for 4 small washers. Is there anything special about them? It sounds like they have a lip on them so that tighting the wheel pushes the whee against the inner ring on the bearing that is rotating. Am i thinking correctly?
thanx for the help.

I have the TinyRC dry bearings in my '65 mustang dragster. It's definitely much faster, and it coasts much further than with the nylon bushings.

There's still a lot of slop in the front, unfortunately. In the rear however, it's almost nonexistant. I'm also having issues with the holes in the wheels being too big for the axles, so I get a lot of play that way too.

IMHO, they're pretty much the same. As I understand it, sealed or dry bearings are just that, sealed. You can't lube them like the open bearing e.g. the RS bearings. Also, the sealed bearings are wider than the open bearings hence the suggested use of the shims.
More on the shims as I understand things. First off they are technically not washers, although one could argue the point. The purpose of using the shims is to take up some of the wheel slop and provide a surface for the bearing to ride on other than the inside of the wheel, which in time would wear out the wheel and cause a whole new problem not to mention the slop.
I have the RS bearing set along with the sealed bearings and shims that I purchased from a LHS. In the long run I'd probably have saved both money and time by buying a complete set from either AM or Tiny.
Either way you go, you'll be buying about the same thing. It's up to you to decide who is going to get your money.
Again, this is just my opinion based on the way that I understand the whole bearing set issue. I may be on the money or I way be way the heck off in left field somewhere.
Hope this helps in some way.

Super Rice, you seem a little misguided by sealed bearings. there is such a thing as rebuilding sealed bearings.
i prefer the trc dry bearings. because of the lack of grease in them there is less resistance in the bearing, and there for will make it run smother.

The tinyRC dry bearings are sealed also, but they are the exact same size as the RS bearings.

The tinyrc bearings are sealed which is a huge advantage if you are running on a less than perfectly clean surface. The open bearing will collect dust and dirt and will need cleaning far more than the sealed.
EDIT: AtomicMods has some great stuff and he does great work but you can find some of his stuff a lot cheaper if you look elsewhere.
Like 18 gauge superflex wire for .89 cence a foot vs. $4.95 for 2 feet. they also have deans conectors

I still buy from Rob but there are other options

BTW: I'm running with a full 8 wide track AM bearings in my XMods (put the extra two in the back, because they still had some play in them). Took all play out of the wheels, and they fit just fine.
