not the pinion gear backwards
take the IDLE gear, and secure it onto the motor(with glue or a wedge of paper)
that will make it faster, but you will have less torque, and pressing forwards will make it go backwards, pressing backwards will make it go forward

All that flippin the pinion really does is better securing the idler gear if it wiggles around. (Came like that on 1 of my clones)

yeah i noticed that all the clones came with the pinion gear mounted backwards on the motors. i think its done to prevent some kid from losing the idler gear if he/she takes off the axle.

I was actually thinking it may have to do with the cheap construction of the clone. The clone of mine that has the backward pinion also has an idler that shifts back and forth a wee bit too much. I noticed when a motor is in with the pinion facing forward/outward, what have you, the idler gear rubs against the tire, and loses contact just enough with the pinion to halt the car.

So this is also applicable to "legit" Bits too?

i run all my cars with the pinion gear as you say "backwords" i even cut a few down. the less horizontal slop the idler gear has the less energy is wasted.

I'll go along with the above. Got all mine set "backwords".
No it doesn't make it run noticeably faster if at all.
But i have lost a gear on a genuine bit once, so heck this came up as a possible way to eliminate lost idler gears.

there is a noticable difference in torque and acceleration when you limit the slop of the idler

mine appeared to accelerate faster and have a higher top speed

Zip Zaps come with the pinion "backwards" too. I found that on some car/motor combos, that the raised edge of the pinion will ride on the spur gear if you do not put the pinion "backwards".

Less torque?! Try like 1/25th as much torque. Consider that standard gears are like 9.something to 1 ratio. Flipping the idler onto the motor and taking out the pinion would reduce the ratio to like 1.something to 1. Basically your motor would be trying to turn your wheels at 20000 rpms or whatever, which is a theoretical speed far beyond what is possible.
