Snowmobiles

Does anyone on here know anything about snowmobiles? Namely I was offered what i believe to have been a heluva deal tonight but didn't wanna take it til i got some info from SOMEONE!! ok heres my question (and if noone can help trhen i guess i'll just pout about it lol

ok this guy offered me an "old Yamaha 300" <--his exact words

now he is including a parts sled and says the problem with the "good" sled is that the coiul needs to be replaced heres my question (actually multiple questions)

1. How Hard is it to change the coil on a snowmobile motor

2. is the coil on a snowmobile motor like the same thing as a magneto on a lawnmower motor?

3. is there any way to be sure that he is right about whats wrong with the sled?

4 would you pay 60 bucks for a sled that neede a coil and a parts sled that allegedly has a good coil?

I believe thats all my questions at this point.

It depends, newer ones have external coils similar to cars, very easy to change. However, the 300 series of Yamahas are seriously old ans would most likely contain the coil just as a magneto.

Yeah you could do a spark test, if there is no fire, then it needs either a coil or points

Depends, if you are mechanically inclined maybe. Also do you have a local snowmobile parts place, since this is old there may be fewer parts to get for it and harder to get things on order.

If you give me more info i can contact my snowmobile parts guy, he is good about what parts are still available.

kill switch

ok my local guy is telling me it could be as simple as the kill switch grounding out somewhere so to see if that is the trouble i would just trace the wires off the kill switch also if the kill switch has been removed from the handlebars would that prevent it from sparking?

the guy i'm thinking about buying it from has already gone to a used snowmobile part place and gotten a coil and points PLUS both are still on the parts sled (the parts shop guy said if it wasn't the kill switch change the points and if its not that it's the coil)

does this sound right? sooooooo..

this is where i stand i'm thinking about buying em the parts place guy says he has a few of these models (76 gs300) for parts

so parts are available
