Parts are fairly cheap, so just do what I'm going to do. Buy several different speeds of motors, get all the gearsets and suspension parts, and just try out all the different combos. Shouldn't cost more than about $40 for the gears, suspension, and a couple of faster motors. And then, if you get other cars, you can have different cars setup for different situations.

Sorry, I'm just used to prices for modding my car, I guess. Heck, a larger-size RC car is a bit more expensive, too. I'm just going to try to get a range of motors (already have a 2.2 and a 2.6, and a 3.8 on the way), get a NiMH battery or two (only have 1 chassis right now, and 1 batt on the way), tires, and a gearset. Then you have all the parts you need to set up several cars for different applications, and you are only looking at ~$50-60 total for all the parts. The cars and motors are the only expensive parts, all the other stuff is fairly cheap.
