Question Coiled Antennas

In viewing the pictures in the collections post, I noticed that the antennas on several of Diego's cars were coiled. Does this enhance the range in anyway, or is this mearly an asthetics issue?

actually i've read that coils hurt range, due to electromagnetic fields.

Question

But isn't a electromagnetic field only generated when the coil is energized?
