I find mine to steer more freely with the spring removed, but that's my personal preference. Others will certainly prefer the return-to-center action of the spring.
Like much of the actions with ZZs, you get to choose.
Of course that makes me wonder if a MT would benefit from the opposite as well: Doubled springs in a crawler configuration using a more powerful steering motor.
My thought is that it might handle rock crawling better if the wheels have more help banging back to center.
