Is 739 smph fast enough?

modifying ZZMT idler gears for fast ZZ pinions

I've uploaded a chart to my website showing the various gear ratios using modified ZZMT idler/transfer gears as ZZ pinions, then computed the estimated speed in both actual and scale mph.

I make no guarantee nor assume any responsibility if the mods do not work or your car flies apart in operation. Nor do I know if you'll need scale noise protection from the effect of the shock wave.

Graphs and a mod tutorial will follow soon on that page. And, thanks to Rich Nagel for information used in the computations.

What's easier, get some super slick upgrade packs. Their motors come with 8,9,10 tooth pinion gears. These are direct swaps with the truck pinions, but for the cars, you'll have to do the insulation trick.

That's a good idea, and probably easier. If you want an "honest" ZipZap, however, you'd not get to use any other product (other than the insulation) and that was the jist of my computations.

Post the details you propose and I'll run the computations for them.

Thanks for your response.

The computations you've done would be the same. This is just an idea to get a better, more stable pinion gear instead of cutting up a green, red, or yellow transfer gear. It's a shame that this doesn't count, I got a ton of the upgrade kits from a Toys R Us very cheap. But yes, I guess if you wanted to stay completely zipzap that this wouldn't work. If you spray WD-40 on your gears, or some other type of lubricant, that will also seep into the wire insulation on the pinion and loosen its hold as well.

But it does count! My chart is illustrative of only the ZipZap equipment. It provides the data of gear ratios and rpms based on RS parts. Anyone may use the chart as a "lookup" to see what their own system or ideas might offer.

My error was in first revealing the chart and not the graphs which I will do later. The graphs will be more generic and show gear ratios (using different pinions) vs. rpm vs. speed. In those graphs there will be no need to specify manufacturers or suppliers. The chart is presented, in part, to immediately provide but one answer to the question of those who seek faster-than-stock ZipZaps. For custom work they might choose to use the two calculators for gear ratios and speed I've provided on the site.

Your comment on lubricants certainly is logical. I prefer graphite as a gear lubricant. Do you see a similar problem there?

And, as a help to some of us, could you provide a more-detailed description of the cars and kits you've obtained at Toys R Us, please?
