No Luck here

Twice I have fried some of the electronics and I don't even know how I did it. I don't do extensive modifications at all, especially not electronics, because I don't understand them. All I know is that I start working on the car then I hear a crackling sound followed by lots of smoke and a bad smell. Both times I didn't catch where the smoke came from, I can say that it comes from around the servo, or transmitter up in the front. I have one last totaly untouched stock car in the package, and I am not going to touch it untill I can figure out what I am doing to my cars when working on them.

first thing you do when working on the car is take the batteries out... this woulda saved your car each time.

not so sure about the antenna thing, but that happened to my first car what happened was my METAL (dumb rat shack people) driveshaft touched the electronics, the exact same thing happened as what you described, what i did was replace the stock one with a wooden shish-kabob skewer and make a D-cut in it and and cut it to length its light weight cheap and easy to make.
