use 24 gauge solid wire. when you solder them make sure to sand the ends a little bit before you tin the wire. that way the solder will stick better to the wire.

Are you using more than 4 cells? If the wire fits, why complain about overkill?
IT makes a helluvalot of difference, even with everything else stock. Those multi strand wires can break easily.
