what do you mean by plastic tires, if you mean the rims, yes they are plastic and the tires are not plastic.
they are real.

when you run it like i do yea,,
bassically i have an autotech class with a ramp in side and completly slick floors like a home garage for like 900 feet from one end to the other. anyays, i use the yellow roadrace motor as it provides mid horsepower/tourqe... red is to slow for me! and i take it up the ramp and get it as fast as possible going down.. then i powerslide to the left and race off do a 180 come back do a powerslide into the ramp turn around anyways... do it over and over till the batts die... last class i had the bats so low it wouldnt spin the tires with it off the ground untill i spun them

The soft tires wear out pretty quickly. The hards seem to last forever tho.

From what I have heard from others, the foam tires work on carpet.
