I've never had a mini-z, but I think these things are almost perfect. It is better than an epoch for driving around the house, because you don't have to charge every 4 minutes, and can use 750mah AAAs. The steering is actually good enough, but the contoller could be better. It is better than the Epoch one though not as good as my Futaba T2PHKA. Had Radio Shack used standard radio protocal, you could have used your own transmitter but they didn't.
The bodies are lovely-period. The speed is pretty good stock. The fact that they give you a carrying case rules. Overall, well worth the $50.
