Talking Stoopud Newbeey Qwestionz, Custom x4 Body!

Hey all,
Yes im just a stoopud newbeey... I have a 1/10th gas RC car that needs some work... even though i know like nothing about RC... I am really, really thinking about gettin a DTM x4 car because i found an OLD 1 channel RC Fiero (im a Fiero fanatic) and it looks as though it will fit PERFECT on the DTM chassis! I am wondering if someone could do some measuring and take a few pics for me?
I would need the measurment from wheel center to top of highest part on chassis (clearence issue)... and perhaps any other places i may have issues with.
Here is the body im using... (see below or wherever the attachment uploads - hehe)

In the one pic you can see i bondoed ine a hole where an engine?!!?!? was lol the Fiero is MID engine so this is astetically correct now!

I know that i will have to prolly dremel off some of the underbody posts that made it fit onto the crappy 1 channel chassis!

If you would like to follow what i have done so far you can follow the progress to a completed x4 here...
http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum1/HTML/021728.html

Also wondering HOW MUCH did you pay for your x4 to get it running... there are like 20 kits! Which do i buy if ANY? Help cause i know nothing about electric r/c or electronics... thanks!

First of all, click HERE for all the X-4 picture you could want. I have pictures of the bare chassis and fully dressed.

Here are all the measurements I think you need:

wheelbase (center of wheel to center of wheel): 110mm
this can be adjusted LARGER

outerside of wheel to outerside of wheel: 139mm foam tires are slightly worn

total chassis length: 145mm

total car length: 146mm (to the end of the rear tire)

front and rear track (total width): 79mm

The highest point on the chassis excluding the body mounts is the front sping holder. From the center line of the wheel verticlly up it is around: 19 to 20mm

I would suggest buying the base X4 kit, it's around 110 bucks from Horrizon Hobby. If there is a kit with bearings get that one instead. I have had a bad experience with the ABC brand all in one electronics unit, so I would suggest using a complication of micro electronics units from different brands.

If you have any more questions please feel free to ask.

The only other question i have to ask is... What electronics do you suggest?!?! Because I dont know much about electric RC...

THANKS a ton for all the info... It looks like the body will fit GREAT!

Also... is that your x4?? Cause its REALLY AWESOME looking!!

Oh yea... one last question... how does the 4wd work on the cars?? looks like there is an output on BOTH sides of the motor?!?!

And if you would need any performance hop ups let me know... I am a machine designer and have Auto CAD at home and could make custom parts!

Yeah,

Do they need any Mechanical Engineers where you work? I need a job!

As far as the motor having two output shafts, your thinking of the Mini-X. The Mini-X is the clear Lexan car. On the X4, the motor sits in mid air, bolted to the rear bulkead. There is a shaft that is underneath the motor that goes from the front crown diff gear to the rear. The spur gear has two different diameter gears molded together (don't remember the technical word for it). One set of teeth mesh with the pinion off the motor. The smaller meshes with the rear diff crown gear.

These are the electronics I use AND recommend:

receiver: AM 27mhz from a Mini-X (TinyRC and IRC sell it for around 20 bucks)

ESC: Novak Spy 65 or less from Tower Hobbies

Servo: HiTech HS-81MG (I have been through many servos and this one is metal gear!!!) The car has no built in servo-savor, also no one makes a saver that small

If you get no other electronics I reccomend, at least get this servo!!! It's quick small and CHEAP around 28 bucks from servocity.com and they charge NO shipping

I have discussed some of my trials and tribulations with electronics over HERE. Please note I have not updated it with the HS 81 servo yet.

You may need to play around with electronics placement to make your body fit. Also, I am NOT so sure about using all that Bondo to fill in the front cavity in the hood. Isn't the front of the body rather heavy? You should try and sand it down from inside, along with the surround plastic. In other words, it would have the same thickness as the rest of the hood.

Glad I could help feel free to mention me over at your other fourm

First of id like to say THANKS A TON for all the info...

As for the body.. well its actually realy light... even with the bondo in it. Id say if i had to compair id say *searching desk for items* it weighs as much as 2 of those "Accent" 7/16" round highlighters... Less than a matchbox car for sure! Hehe!

I know that when i get the car i will have to sand down most of the poles, braces, and dropdowns in the body... but ill wait till i get the car to see what doesnt clear... according to your measurements the front spring holder seems like it will clear!

As for electronics... i havent yet checked the price on the ECS but so far it looks like the list of things you gave me is cheaper then what some places want for that ABC electronics kit!!

What about battery charger? It doesnt come with one right??
I made another post in the hop up section asking about all the battery stuff so i wont ask here for it just to get repeated!

I never really have seen the Mini X but from the pic you showed me it just looked like there were 2 outputs on the motor thats why i asked... The floating motor seems like a good idea BUT doesnt that put the center of gravity rather high on the chassis?

Well, I wished we needed Mechanica Engineers but we dont .
However you could come be an injection operator! Thats what i do (all those years of CAD design for this) but it pays well, 13 an hour and 12 hour days... were on manditory SEVEN DAYS when i start there! Talk about a pay check... Hop up central here i come!

Ill also mention this site on the forum and directly per PM to the parties that seemed interested and or talked to me about Mini RC cars!

Again i CANNOT thank you enough!!

***OH YEA BY THE WAY - i couldnt click your link because it was all ***** out... like... www.********.com perhaps (like my girlfriend) you have a swear word in the title... Makes it a pain to post links off her site because of that... hers is www.turbo-b!tch.com substitut I for ! lol!

Sorry about the bad thread.

And no, I am not interested in being an injection operator either. Sorry

As far as mod parts, there are none! It comes with duel ball diffs. I suppose you could consider bearings a "mod"

The more I look at that Fiero body, the more I think it's too shallow. What I mean is, I think the hood line might be too low. The front-end really doesn't have much depth, I think the body may end up sitting on top of the chassis.
