The universal joint is plausible. It is also the most realistic if you choose to keep the original steering.
Replace the front axle pins with flexible teflon or similar type plastic wire. The wires will run thru the steering knuckle (where the axle pins were) and the tires will mount on the ends. the other end of the wires will be attached to motors. The beauty of this concept is that the other motors can be located anywhere. Say you were to make it a semi, then it could be housed in the trailer.
This concept works because my son has a plane that works on the same concept. The propeller at the nose is attached to a wire that runs thru the fuselage and down one wing, then thru a housing to a flashlight type lightsaber looking case with a mabuchi 540 motor motor in it. The cable is directly attached to the motors shaft. The plane spins around in circles over my sons head when he turns it on.
