The contacts are actually micro switches; and yes they
can wear out, but I wouldn't think that it could happen that quickly. Unless maybe someone was jamming on them very hard and they actually broke or wore out prematurely that is.
You could always open the controller and try jumping the solder connections with a wire to check if the switches are indeed the problem.
