Welcome! I was a newb to micro r/c too just a few weeks ago. I loved the Mach too, and now that I have it it's a beauty and alot of the mods can be done with it - but alot can't. The good thing about the Auto Modellista set is the #of bodies you get with the set, (4) so you can practice on one you don't like. Also as mentioned it is a booster set, so it can go two speeds.
The Initial D set is sitting on my desk right now (for a friend) and the # of bodies apply here too, since you get 2. You get a weak motor but as you said you like to mod, so upgrade away! Also the bodies look like they can support the light mods, etc unlike the Mach body, which is not clear plastic and have painted-in light apetures. Also the Trueno (Toyota Corolla) and Mazda RX-7 look more realistic than alot of the other bodies out there, which could appeal to you.
