I replace the antenna in my controller with the 6 section 17 3/4" antenna from Radio Shack ($4.99, I think). It was really easy, took about 20 mins (counting time to walk out to my grinder to grind the bottom off, which I really didn't have to do).
It's darned simple to do...just take the 4 screws out of the back (one under the battery compartment), take the back off. Unscrew the small screw at the base of the antenna and take it out. Take the new antenna, unscrew the small screw in its base and take out the L-shaped bracket. Put it where the original antenna was, slide the tab from the antenna connection wire into the slot in the new antenna, put all 5 screws back where they were, and you should be good to go.
My range indoors (with reasonably-charged batteries) is around 30'. Goes up to close to 40' with fully-charged batts.
