I also had a 007 body that did that same thing too, well my younger brother's to be exact. I tried to cut away from the front of the body to make it fit easier. I had success getting it to fit.
Steering can get touchy too... perhaps some of the trim could get it to go straight. I know I've had a lot of trouble where one wheel will get a hair wrapped up inside. I still haven't found an easy way of getting the hub off to get the hair out. Tweezers don't really work either.
Good luck though, it's nice to have people around that approach problems with ways to fix them rather than, "I'm just going to take it back."
