They're better than the Gen1. Their turning radius is much smaller, and they're much less complicated. IIRC there's only three different kinds of screws in the Evo and something like ten types of screws in the Gen1, which generally makes them easier to work on.
They are not, however, hobby grade, and they never will be. No Xmod will ever be a MiniZ killer on anything but a straight drag. That said, Xmods are a lot of fun. If you and your friends all drive Xmods, who cares if they aren't as fast as a MiniZ? Everyone can afford an Xmod. Not everyone can afford a MiniZ.
Worst that can happen is you're out twenty bucks.
