I noticed this too. It seems like the motor will affect the how sharply the car turns. 5/7 is a pretty good steering ratio. you might be able to tweek the trim on the bottom of the car to get more steering steps. If you turn the steering wheel on the controller and there is some 'play' b4 the wheels on the car turn. Try turning the screw a little to see if you can take out some of the 'play'. You can fine tune on the controller if the car drifts a little after you make the adjustment on the car. This has worked for me on some of the older SEs, But I'm not sure if it will work on your newer GT.
Good thinking with the razor blade. I'm sure prying the axle out a little will help too. If you have some needle tip tweezers they work for pulling out hairs, fibers and other junk.
I'm not sure if double charging will damage the battery. Personally I have double charged all my cars and haven't had any problems. I think I read somewhere in this forum that it is okay to double charge your battery. You should probably check around though. Or maybe someone else has the answer??
When I double charge I don't really notice a difference in speed, but it definately runs longer. Maybe a little more speed, but my track is only 4'X8' and has a lot of turns, so I don't really get to go full throttle too often.....
