The ZZ transmitter does not have a crip cap but I have noticed many of them do have crappy range. I tried a transmitter from a newer ZZ on the same car (also 27mhz obviously) and got way more range. Even better, I put a longer telescoping antena and got about 5 - 6 more feet. So see if RS will exchange it for you since it may have been a design flaw in certain version of the X-mitter.
