By putting a cap there it allows for more instantanious on, and helps keep the power more consistant towards the end of the battery charge. Infact, if you are going to do a dual cell or add additional electrical stuff (i.e. extra lights), then you might want to look at increasing the size of the cap.

Sorry, I was thinking that the "cap" was the voltage regulator, that it downs the voltage of the 2.4 volt battery. I was thinking that if you removed it, more voltage would go in. However, I think that the voltage regulator would be embedded somewhere in the P.C.B., so you probably would need something different......
