Sorry, I was thinking that the "cap" was the voltage regulator, that it downs the voltage of the 2.4 volt battery. I was thinking that if you removed it, more voltage would go in. However, I think that the voltage regulator would be embedded somewhere in the P.C.B., so you probably would need something different......
