Thanks Crusader4x for mentioning the internal resistance issue. Those who are not familar with this issue assume alkalines would make the car faster because of the higher voltage which is not usually the case. The internal resistance determines how fast a battery can deliver its energy and how well they work in high drain applications like RC cars. That is why NI-cads generally have more "punch", alkalines typically deliver slightly longer run times, and NI-MH battteries are a good compromise between the two. Also rechargeable alkalines are a poor choice for a hi drain application like RC cars. The RS XMODS charger set is a good value for the price and the charger is very small when folded up. Other brands of NI-MH batteries may make the car faster as mentioned in prior posts.
