It is risky if you're not careful. But it's not all that bad. Although I would check the gears in the back first. If the back wheel axle is loose, then it probably creates alot of friction when it's turning, which creates drag. I don't mean loose like it comes out easy, I mean loose like it slides left and right easy. If so take the back wheels off, grab a small hammer or other useable object and gently bang the wheels closer to each other.
Opening the inside of the steering box is more for unequal steering problems.
