I want the most bang for the 4'x8' but I don't want it to be 1) No fun because your always running into walls and 2) I want to have room to scenic the layout as well... water, mountains... believe it or now I was thinking helepad as well because there are supposed to be some TinyRC Copters at some point that I read about a while back... You are exactly where I was a few months ago. I had exactly the same questions and aspirations. I designed my track on a sheet of paper 6 times. I finally settled on design number 3 in the series. I laid a 1/2"=1/2' grid out on each sheet of paper so I could keep the scaling up accurate. I did one design using 6" lanes and it netted me almost twice as much track length, but I'm glad I went with 9" as 6 would be to tight on a technical course. 9" seems the best width to use for driving enjoyment verses getting the most track out of your board. It's still difficult enough to stay interesting, but not so much you can't navigate it without bouncing from barrier to barrier. And, like you I wanted some landscaped areas. I sacrificed a few feet of track to keep some space for larger landscaping projects as well, but I'm glad I did. I built the helipad because I plan to try to build a micro heli conversion from a Zip. I haven't made any progress on that and don't know if I will if some company beats me to it so I can just buy one. Most of the fun of building this thing is still coming as I am going to enjoy lighting the track most of all. I have lots of ideas for that sort of eye candy. But, that part runs into more money for parts and I have to ease that stuff past the ole lady. Good luck with your track! I know it's one of my favorite parts of the hobby.
