I used to use 8-1/2" x 11"...

I think the only ones you can mismatch are the motors and the idler gears.
The pinions on the idler gears and the final driven gear are different ratio's and should not be mismatched.

The driveline could be used to make a 4wd ZZcar but it would take some serious modding.
