1/18th and 1/24th scale tracks

After drooling over Dr. Drift's track layouts it got me to thinking: could I do the same for larger cars?

As many of you know, I already create different ovals for 1/18th scale cars but a road course would really be awesome. I would look to your input as to the size of the panels, shapes etc.

Dr Drift, I couldn't find anywhere on your site the different track piece designs. How many different pieces are there? How many pieces total?

Does anyone else have any ideas about a larger scale track? Let's work together and we'll all come out ahead with a great design!

Currently 19 elements are finished (11 different designs) plus 2 elements are under construction.
If you want to build a modular track for 1/18 RC-cars, the elements have to be huge! Maybe you should think about a modular guard rail system instead. You´d just need to find a way to fix them to the ground, otherwise the rails would disarrange everytime you hit them.

I was thinking of 36" to 42" square panels that would sit on the ground and butt up to one another. I would probably need some kind of frame to keep them square.

I looked at your sitea few days ago and swear I didn't see that section. Thanks

How much are you willing to spend?
 

You can find laminate wood flooring (like pergo) for between $.76 and $1.50 a square foot (you can always spend more). Get the interlocking glueless kind and you will be able to pick it up and move it. The pieces are a little over 47" long and about 7" wide. For a 20X16 (320 square foot) track you are looking at about $400 after you add gaurd rails (pvc). I only have about 120 feet so far but it works great for 1/43 and mini-z.

I made a modular track from 2'x2' styrene used to cover fluorecen lights and some palstic molding for barriers. It was excelent for my Epoch but I needed more traction with my Mini-z so I painted with a flat gray paint and now it's really grippy. I love my track.

What are the walls made of?
Do the tiles attach to each other?
How many cars can race at once?

The walls are made from some plastic molding I found at Home Depot. I glued them with hot glue and Goop. They're really strong, I'm not the best driver so I crash a lot and they're holding very good.

I hold the tiles together with tape for easy on and off installation so my wife could have her living room back.

I just race with my brother, because we don't know anyone with Mini-z here in PUerto Rico, but I think 3 or 4 cars will be the maximun nunber of cars.

Here is a pic of my Bit modular track. It's made from styrene 1' x 1' squares and rope barriers.
