Guard rail ideas?

What is everyone using for guard rails on their tracks?

We currently have a rope track setup on the floor at work, but we're getting ready to build a modular track in 2'x2' sections that we can mix and match to create different tracks.

We have the layout done for the sections, the blackboard paint for the road, and green paint for the non-road areas. However we're still trying to decide what to use for guard rails/barriers.

My first thought, self adhesive foam rubber weather stripping, is easy to install and looks great. The problem is, the foam is too 'grippy', and hitting the wall at even a really small angle still stops all the cars cold.

We need something with less grip, but not so hard that it becomes beneficial to "ride the rails" through the whole track. Also, something that could be painted in red and white stripes is also of prime consideration, as we want the track to 'look' good.

When we do get around to building it, I'll certainly post pictures. In the meantime, does anyone have some ideas on what we should use?

Thanks,

Jon

well...balsa wood works good but im not sure how that would go down on a modular track...it works well on tracks with landscaping and such.
Ive got a question too...what do you think is a good alternative to balsa wood? i need something that will take paint and glue well, and is solid enough (not cardboard). Balsa wood is too expensive... i need something else
