Tri-Cell gone bad
 

Hi,
I got my charger for my tri-cell Ferrari all done. I chargered her up for 30 seconds when I started to hear something sizzling. I frantically ripped apart the car and noticed the battery inside was scolding hot. The other batteries outside of my car were still cold. I am guess ing that they were not getting any electricity. I know all of my solders have good connections. Someone siad to me that I should never solder directly onto the batteries. He siad get solder tabs. I just wanted to know if anyone has any suggesdtions.

lol that person was me, sorry to hear about your car. Were you sure that you have the batteries all connected to the postitive an dnegative ends. For you next mod contact DKS or QFM. DKS has helped me greatly with my mod but im sur eQFM can also prove helpful support.

Y cant u sauder directly to the battery? (im planning SOMETIME in the future to do a tri celll mod)

dude..... i'm thinking that you got the Sizzling becuz you didn't insulate the cell inside the chassis properly, therefore all that Triple Voltage was being received by only the 1st cell, causing it to overheat.......... thats what i think, l8r

Are u sure that it was set on the charger the right direction? the negative on the charger to the negative of the 1st bat? and the pos of the charger to the pos of the 3rd?

Yes I am positive I had it on the right way. How do you insulate a cell?

heat shrink tubing works pretty well

you can solder directly to cells
 

you can solder directly to cells as long as you ahve a powerfull soldering iron as you dont want to be applying the heat for too long or the heat will build up and damage the cell.

this is how all 1/10th racing packs are made up as the cells normaly come loose.

a 35W soldering iron works for me!
U c u have to heat the surface of the cell,and feed the solder onto the cell direct,whilst holding the wire there.

A low wattage iron will just take too long! as it doesn't produce enough heat to heat the surface, as the WHOLE cell takes the heat.

I always coat the wire as well.

my gun is 240/325 watts it makes my friends pissed because they can't solder to batterys but i have done it lots of times and i usually rub it in their faces.
