Solder Kit
 

i wanna get a solder kit so i can do mods on my micro rc. i jus wanna know if this is a good kit 2 get. im also a beginner at soldering.Radio shack solder kit

i think its a good idea to get one with a stand/holder for the iron and a space for a sponge to wipe excess slag.

i just checked and it does come with a stand. how bout desoldering? can i use this kit or do i need diff equipments?

well you can simply get the solder point hot and pull the solder off. do you mean a solder sucker? my friend has a nice one with a pump hooked up to it. you can also buy a cheaper one that doesnt use a motor but is a bitch to use.

I bought a soldering iron from Radio Shack last Saturday. I got a 30 watt iron, flux, heat sink and scraper for $7.99 and the I got the stand and the thing with the sponge for another $6.99. All in all, I think I got a great deal. The sponge and holder is a MUST!

I didn't need the other tools. If you don't have them then, get that kit and the other Radio Shack kit with the sponge. I guess you can use a cheap sponge from Wal-mart or something.

holder is deffinately a must, i was soldering on my air hockey table and my iron tipped over and burrned my table

im sure that 15$ for a complete soldering kit is pretty good. the sponge doesnt matter where it is from as long as it is wet and somewhat smooth. also the quality of solder matters somewhat. and the most important thing is to keep the tip clean and smooth(which is what the sponge is for) and to cover both connections with solder first. once you do that you pretty much set them in the position you want and bring the heat in until they melt a little and let go and hold it for 3seconds.

i imagine most beginners would just try to drop a glob onto the ends and hope they dont get any wherever they dont want it. i did that at first.
