Upgrading an Evo Xmod?
 

Hey everyone this is my first post and im new to x mods, but notto r/c racing. Ive been racing r/c nitro cars and trucks for a while now. I need help upgrading my evo x mod. I know how to tune and upgrade all the chassis parts like the suspension and tires and such cause of my nitro experience, but one thing nitro r/c hasnt taught me is about the electrical parts of r/c's. I dont know what will fry my car and what will make it go faster. Im really enjoying this car and my girlfriend is happy that I like it because she got it for me. Its too cold for nitros so this is all I have right now. Whats the best battery I can use? Can I use 8 AAA's? Should I get a better quality battery set up instead? Whats the best motor I can use? Money isnt too much of an issue. What about modifying the esc? What should I do to it? Who offers optional parts for it, such as aluminum and carbon fiber parts? Is it too new for any of this yet? I dont know how long the evo has been out for, but it seems like everything Ive read is for the original chassis x mod. Any help would be greatly apprepicated. Thanks in advanced.

Welcome to the Xmods world. Where to start huh? I guess I'll start with batteries. I don't think you can get away with 8 cells, the most I have heard of was 6 and that was on the 1st gen cars. Some people use lithium ion's or lithium polymers, but that does require some modification to use. Personally I use rechargeable Ni-MH AAA's. I get goo power and about 20 to 25 minutes run time on them. There are faster motors out there than what RS sells, but to use them you need to upgrade the FET's. As far the chassis goes, I'm not to sure if there are really any out there for the Evo's yet, but I could be wrong. The steps for modifying it isn't too much different than the gen1's, just some differnt parts that's all.

Thanks very much for the reply it was pretty helpful. I have a few more questions though. Has anyone upgraded the FET's on an evo X mod? Im already using the NIMH AAA's but was wondering if theyre was anything better that wasnt too hard or that much to put in. Thos other batts seem like a lot for them and a charger, but I may have been looking in the wrong places. What would I need to do to get those Lithum type batts in my evo?

Atomicmods.com has a lithium polymer upgrade that doesn't require chaging out the chassis, however you do still need to buy a charger and the batteries themselves aren't the cheapest. You could always put the lithium ions in by taping them to the top of the chassis, but you'll raise the center of gravity quite a bit doing that. This is the answer I got about upgrading FET's when upgrading the power source from another message board.

What if I did what to add fet's? I kind of want to go all out with it, I just need to learn all this stuff like I did with my Nitro R/c's. What is the difference between li-po's and li-ion batts anyway? What special precautions would I have to do to take care of them? How long do they take to charge? What Fet's would be recommended and are they hard to install with a good solder skill? Im sorry about all the questions but I will have many more to come too.

As far as I know the biggest difference between the 2 types of lithiums is discharge rate and the weight of the cells. The actual install of the FET's is not supposed to be that hard if you are decent with a soldering iron.

If you are going to with these upgrades, shop around and see if any of the other online shops have any better deals. Although I haven't heard anyone on here complain about Atomic Mods service, I do know I found some of the stuff for gen1 cars cheaper elsewhere. Defineatly read up on the battery precautions, and if you do put in lithium cells and upgrade the FET's, then go ahead and get yourself a highend motor to put that power to work. There are tons out there you can buy already built or you can get parts and build a frankenstein motor. I'm more than happy to answer all the questions that I can, we all got to start somewhere.

Darn thing double posted me.

I havent been able to find the FET's anywhere else for a cheaper price. Do you know of any? How high should I stack the FET's? Id really like to do these mods so I can have a very fast tiny rc car to play with in the house and in school to pass the time. Thanks for all the help so far, it really is doing a lot for me to understand everything.

they have motors especially made for the evo.also if you get li-ons some of those motors wont run on stock fets no more cause there being pushed alot more wich makes them pull more,so i would recommend that you upgrade the fets heres a few sites that sell them
