ZipZap Paint
Anybody know what type paint they used on the ZZ bodies? My guess would be that it's either Acrylic or Epoxy because it's not reacting to my first choice in stripping solvents how I'd hoped. :(
Anybody who already knows what type paint it is, happen to also know what solvent will strip with no damage? |
I believe it's acrylic. Rubbing alcohol should take it off.
|
Um, are you sure of this?
I hit a scrap of body (Desperado II's spare roof chunk) with some 70% Isopropyl Alcohol, and it seems to have weakened the base plastic. It might have just been due to the stresses of cutting it'd had, but can you please confirm. |
I would also like to know what will strip stock paint if anyone knows. I do know testers paint thinner, goof off, acetone do not work well. Goof off will take off the paint, but also eats into the body. maybe the paint is some mixture of color and whatever the body is made of. I know that somewhere I have seen a clear body. Maybe it came that way???
ps. On a side note if someone could point me to the best tut on iwaver'ing an MT I would appreciate it. |
Try simple green 100% just soak the body in it for a couple of hours. Ive used it to remove acrylic, enamel, epoxy all kinds of paint from all kinds of materials.
|
i've got my 'stang body in some Simple Green right now, i eventually plan to airbrush it black with silver racing stripes, is gonna look sweet with tab lowering and muscle machine wheels :bdrop: :D
|
:( it didn't do a thing!
|
they must have different paint on the MT because it worked fine for me. but I have run into some things it will not strip. The next thing i would try is getting a old body and start testing different chemical strippers on it. I know we used to use easyoff oven cleaner on 25mm wargame figs to strip paint but its pretty strong stuff.

Ok, so that means we know that the following don't work:
CSC, 70% Isopropyl Alchohol, Testors paint thinner, Goof off (will take off the paint, but also eats body), Acetone, Simple Green, |
ok this sounds stupid but I spilled brake fluid on my lexan 10th scale body while moving some boxes in the garage today and guess what it stripped the paint off evrywhere I didnt get it cleaned up in time. just a thought lol. I now have the body soaking in SG trying to get the rest off so i can repaint it.
|
Yeah, DOT 2 is supposed to do the best of the brake fluids, but I haven't tried it. You gonna try?
|
So far it looks like its not hurting the lexan but i dont have a extra ZZ body to try it on
|
Well the detail on the bodys is so small there would be a loss of definition if you sand too much or put more than one coat of paint on it. I actually have found that bleach will remove chrome from plastic parts for painting but have not tried it on paint yet.
|
I don't know if dot 2 is similar to dot 3 brake fluid, but for those of us keeping score, dot 3 is out. Allthough I did find an interesting side effect. If you want to take sharpie off of a car, dot 3 will take it right off with absolutely no effect on stock paint whatsoever (at least from what I could see).
