Whats the absolute most powerful motor with stock sizing?
hey guys, I've decided to go all out and do some major mods n junk to my XMOD.
-CF chassis w/ the pro kit -sealed bearings -CF shaft -Associated quantum micro reverse ESC -Airtronics 2 channel radio with their new micro reciever -The Hitec servo that works with the chassis. -some kind of li-ion power But I don't know what motor I should go with, that will fit in the stock motor mount (or comes with something to make it mount correctly) Also, how do you attach the pinions to the motor shaft? they don't exactly seem easy to get off the stock XMOD motors... |
To date, I do not know anyone that can beat our 'R-Tune' motor. We have clocked 30MPH with a 5-cell on the dyno. If you rewind it to 28 turns of 30AWG, we have hit 44MPH with Lithiums on the dyno.
For pulling pinions, do a Google search for "GWS Micro Pinion Puller" ... that is what ya need. I also sell bare pinion gear sets if you want to just hammer them on a new motor. |
well since you are upgrading the ESC i would go with a motor that has the lowest number of turns that the ESC can handle, and will fit in the motor. you may need to make a special holder though.

xmodspeed, thats definitly the fastest spec'ed motor I know of. Accept, I don't really have any idea what I'm doing when it comes to winding motors... so stock is what I'm stuck with.
Aperson, thats what I'm trying to avoid. I really watnt to keep the motor mount as stock as possible. |
If you want the fastest with the stock ESC (No FET Upgrade), my 'S-TUne' is about the limit. After running it for a 1/2 hour, the FETs get pretty toasty. It will get you in the mid-20's.
We recommend the heatsink upgrade on our Tutorial page when running the 'S-Tune' on stock FETs. |
IF, I go ahead with this mod project... I'll have the AE ESC anyway. Way more then capable of handling anything these little guys can throw at it.

What are the specs of that ESC?
Just FYI - The 'R-Tune' draws 5A nominal and if rewound to 28-turns (see 40MPH Dragster Project), it draws about 6.8A. |

Mine's finished its testing. Got the driving issues resolved and it works great. Made specifically for xmods.
Specs: Max voltage = 20V Max current. = 74A Power dissipation = 200W Combined N/P channel R(DS)on = 0.028 Ohms Gates are fully driven(10V VGS, or greater if VCC is greater than 10V) I connected a rather huge DC motor (about the size of the xmod car itself) to this h-bridge and stalled the motor for max current draw. The h-bridge was lovin' it. It did not overheat nor relent. Now the weak link is going to be the cells. Li-ions don't like too much current draw. |
Well, if you find any power source thats better then li-ion let me know!
All in all this is an extremely expensive ordeal... so most likely it won't be happening for a while. |
From what I've heard, li-polymer cells are designed for high current output.
The things that li-ion doesn't like is A) being fully charged, and B) heat. Those are the two biggest factors in shortening a li-ions shelf-life. Li-ions like to be cold and discharged when storing. So if you're the type that has to make sure your cells are topped off with charge AND run a super hot motor, your cells are going to be toast, and quick. |
I have the S Tuned motor. I can't see why anybody would want to trust a plastic motor mount to hold it in. I polished the inside of the heatsink/motor mount and used silver thermal paste between it and the motor. Plastic balloons on the screws.
Runs great. I want to run Li-poly but can't find cells that are sized right. I have a carbon fibre chassis and the slots cut for aaa cells are annoying. When 600 mAh li-poly aaa cells come out I'll be ready. A flat 600 mAH Li-cell folded in half would have the right dimentions |
would a big power cap like say 4700uf help out the lions with dips from current draw?
