A Painting Story
 

I sanded and sanded, filled and sanded, filled and... well anyway it was coming along beautiful. On went the primer so I could see the flaws...and wow it was ready. On went the black gloss with a slight green metallic fade, just enough so it would turn from black to green depending on the way you looked at it...it was gorgeous. The final coat went on fast, setup perfectly with a mirror finish. ...and then I clearcoated it. ARRGGHHHH! Not only did it completely dull my silver headlights and spoiler (which I expected it would), but it eliminated any and all color depth. I mean it just took the AHHH! to ACK! in no time flat. Devastated as I was, I learned to accept it, after all, the bodywork looked great, and the paint was pristine, even if it wasn't what I had intended. So I took my silver and repainted the spoiler and headlights and oops..screwed up the headlight, got the thinner, tried to wipe it off, it softened the clearcoat, sliver and clearcoat and papertowel stuck all over the freakin front end CRAP CRAP CRAP!

Note to self: Don't clearcoat metallic anything, and never EVER screw up on the details.

But all hope is not lost, however, as the complete cluster I created on the front end forced me to re-work, re-prime, and re-paint. Wouldn't you know it, with the extra practice, the second time around just might be better than the first.

I tried to show the finish the best I could in the pic. In a few days I'll paint the headlights again hehehe. I'm dying to get the wheels under this thing!

man that teribly sucks i have done that like 2 times and it just gets u sick to your stomach beacuse all that work was in vane but im sureee it will still work out. heres how my paint job turned out.

My own horry story is the yellow civic I was getting ready to paint. Gave it a putty body kit that took way too much of my time, filled in the panel lines with putty and rescribed them to look more to scale, sanded down the paint... then someone suggested trying nail polish remover to take the paint off the lights. Did so. Nothing happened. Much more. Little bit starting to come off. Dipped rear end in the acetone. Back of car melted.

It looks like it's been in a fire.

Oh that's got me beat by a long shot! LOL, this could turn out to be the Body Modder Anonymous thread.

Yes I have shared some awful paint times too. When I was painting I knocked over my paint and it spilled over my top. The winshield and the back were covered with paint. Oh well, thats life.

The worst thing I ever did was I forgot to mask the inside of the body. When I sprayed the paint it got all over the inside of it, giving the windows a blue tint.

i did that too, i fixed it with paint thinner though

I tried paint thinner but it was starting to fog the windows up so I stopped. Ohyeah, the paint started peeling off a few weeks later so I just gave up.

Is that chassis lengthened on your supra....if so could u tell me how u did it? Im looking around and i cant see how everyone does this.

My first and luckily only painting horror story would be the "not masking the windows on the inside". It probably wouldn't have been so bad, but I was painting from an angle under the car to get into all the cracks. Needless to say, I scrapped that one and learned a lesson.

When I get some pics up of the whole thing you'll be able to see what I did, but no, I didn't lengthen the chassis on this one. I made the body "look" longer by moving the spoiler back and building up the nose, which I guess actually makes the body longer...but the wheel base is still the same and it will fit on a stock chassis. My painting woes continue with overspray on the inside, not to mention the windows where pretty scratched up before I started, so now the damn paint is glossier than the windows...and it looks pretty odd. Not sure yet how to get the windows glossy again...clearcoat?
