extended wheelbase bit showroom
Ok, I know this will probly fade out and not become all popular and whatnot, but I'd like to see how everybody makes their extended bits. Possibly we could see some with slot car bodies, fiberglass or carbon chassis, or innovative new motor and steering configurations. I have a few things up my sleeve, just as soon as I get my allelectronics order in. That, and I unglue my hand from my forehead, but thats a different story... Here is my extended clone, missing front end. I intend on making a front setup that is lower profile with closer tolerance than the stock box type thing. I also want to make a custom rear end, with the idler gear supported more so it doesnt wobble, and the motor moved down to lower the cg. Anyway, here are some pics of my extended clone, the rear end is a chopped kitracer, dual cell, kit body.

That truck is very cool. Did you have any trouble with anything during construction? Like was there anything that you ran into that you didnt expect? How did you connect the motors to the pcb?

How did you connect the motors to the pcb? the biggest problem was finding a plastic truck body that could be made to fit the extra back end and motor is just wired to the first 1 i did not touch pcb |
that pan chassis car...*stops breathing*:eek: Have you put the front knuckles on yet? hows the weight? any plans for quicker charging setup?

Well, no I havent completed the front end yet, but I think I'll work on it some more tonight after I finish homework. Weight is lower compared to a normal dual cell just because there is less plastic on the chassis, but I do not know if it is appreciable. I think my 40mah batteries will be here from allelectronics soon, so they will go on there instead of the 1/3aaa's. I plan on using 4 total, 2 80mah sets in series to make 2.4v and 80mah. They are lighter and hopefully they will allow the pcb to be under the top of the body. The charger I am using charges in about 5 minutes, with the cells just slightly warm. I hope it will charge nimh just as well as it does nicd. The only thing I am concerned about at the moment is the ratio of the kit gears. With a 2.6, they are very slow starting. I'd like to mod the pcb to give more current, but Its from a clone, so I would have no idea where to start. More to come later.
By the way, the explorer looks good. |

Really? hmm... Damn. Well maybe i'll just do single cell and R-spec. I'm gonna experiment tho. Thanks for the heads up. Now if it doesnt work very well I wont worry that it was something I did.

Ok, I am doing some 3d modeling for the bit pan car. I have modeled the motor, pinion, rear kit wheels, and tires. I'm workin on the rest in the mean time. After this is all modeled and built, I'll make blueprints, so anybody with some knowledge about how to read prints and make small parts should be able to follow. For those interested, I am using SolidWorks 2000. My avatar shows a rendering of an assembly with the motor and pinion.

solidworks... i will have to check that out. i have been buried in the autocad world for years. but am trying to get into Maya. but i would be interested in your prints. i have myself been working on creating drawigns of bodys, and car parts in acad. but have been busy so not much has been done with it. good luck with your modding..

The greatest thing about solidworks other than the ability to do precise 3D assembly (those who have used 3D studio MAX will appreciate the ability to position stuff right) is that it will make a detailed 3 view line drawing from your 3d model. It will also do isometric line drawings, and almost anything else. Then you can add dimensions, notes, bill of materials (does this for you automatically as well), etc. The first summer that I worked a Precision Cutting Systems, I used acad for drafting, but they went to solidworks, and not only is it easier to draw in, but it makes designing much much easier... I have been using it for the last 2 years, and had prior drafting experience, but it is easy to learn for anyone with a little cad or 3d experience. Here is what I have so far... The axle support in the rear and the clip that holds the motor will be all one peice, bent to shape. The chassis will be plastic, because it is cheaper and easier to work with. The carbon fiber just looks cool rendered. On the real thing i think i want to use tomy pullback wheels, front and rear. I just modeled the KIT wheels cuz thats what I have.

Another... I calculated gearing for a 6t pinion and 23t spur, 3.83:1 which is close to kit gearing but since the rear wheels will ultimately be smaller, the distance per revolution will be less, so its an effective lower ratio, something to the tune of 4:1 in comparison to a bit with normal rear wheels.

oops, I changed my mind on a few things. The axle bracket will be separate from the motor clip, and will be aluminum. The motor clip will be spring steel. After trying to make one, I realized that the brass is not springy enough to hold the motor correctly. I also changed the motor orientation. More to come, but sleep comes first.

sorry for the stupid question but i want to shorten my bit but i dont want to trash a good one so i going to make an aluminum one (that what you used rite bdebde?) anyways how do you cut the stuff????

I am using very thin aluminum (less than 1/32'' thick) cuts fine with tin snips, just cut a little large and file edge to smooth out.

ok, i have 2 ideas concerning steering...
One is a linear approach, like the stock steering, and one is a rotary approach, with a pivot between the magnet and the arm that goes to the knuckles, much like a servo. I have done some more thinking on the motor clip and axle bracket, and got some material. the motor clip would be easier to make with music wire, especially since i could not find any spring steel sheet readily, and the axle bracket is .016 aluminum now, instead of the .032 like i have drawn. I will have some more renderings up at some point. |
