7.2v with Overland ball diff. and Mini-z wheels
 

Hi,
I don't have the GPM ball diff. for Tripmate, but I found that GPM for mini-z overland fits nice.
And I used mini-z front wheels, too.

Yes, I've seen that aritcle. That's a great modification.
But I couldn't cut CF for the modified H plate, so I tried overland ball diff. cuz it doesn't require the self-made H plate...

No, the sonic racer hasn't been released yet here in Japan. But the batteries are released. They are 1.2v- 270mA par cell and half AAA size.

Yes, the OL diff fits the Kawada with no mods. Just use the spacers that come with the Mid.

And note that the OL pully has only 36 teeth. That means you must use a very torqueful motor or a pinion large enough.

Not sure now whether to adapt mini-z chassis for fm with tripmate electronics, or adapt kawada for mini-z diff& wheels...

If you have a spare GPM Ball Diff for the mini-Z or Mid you can use its spur gear on the OL diff so you get 40T or 42T.

FM Mini-Z/ Tripmate Hybrid
 

I spent most of last night squeezing the Kawada's steering setup, servo, Rx, and ESC onto a Mini-Z chassis. I had to cut the battery plugs off the ES-01, and soldered on a pair of rings to the wires, so they are connected to the chassis in the same way the mini-z PCB. I shaved the ribs off the inside of the Z chassis; the inside walls are flat and the receiver slides in (just about). I am using the Tripmate knuckles on the Z kingpins, and the servo from the mini-x, on it's side, with a tab sliced off. They are a little wide; they bind a little, so I'll try the Tripmate pins tonight. I also had to cut away some of the stock bulkhead to allow the servo horn to move freely. I attached the plug I cut off the ESC to a stock Kyosho motor as the Tripmate motor didn't fit kyosho mount. Unfortunately, neither of my cameras are working at the moment, so I'll fire up the scanner tonight to give you a better idea of what I have done. I now have a Tripmate chassis minus electronics and steering, and a mini-z ESC with a servo in a bag, and a FM Mini-Z... :cool::eek:
I just need to get another FM Rx and steering kit to get the Tripmate running again, (ESC on its way.... :D)I might rob the receiver in my micro, but that would be defeating the purpose... I'm probably gonna order a ball diff from this site soon, and move everything back to the Kawada... I suppose the next mods will be: swap the motor for something hotter (still have a pair of Neos and a BB can waiting to be used, ) and possibly another cell or two...

Hi Cian,

Here's a project I worked on before that you might get ideas from. An MR01 chassis with excess plastic gutted out just like yours. I made what looks like a big h-plate to keep the radio gear in. I managed to fit in a caseless Hitec Shredder and "flattened" ES-01. For the servo, I used a GWS Pico servo with the mounting supports removed. This thing ran pretty good until the M24 Mid arrived-- which was what I was trying to make this thing into :D .

Here's a pic of one of my Mids using an Overland ball diff axle with a racer spur. This car is currently "under maintenance" so the radio gear has been removed. I use a LWB Kyosho F40 Mini-Z body with this one. Rims were painted with Alclad lacquer chrome.

This is my other Mid which is now also using an OL ball diff but with a 40T spur gear from the GPM ball diff for the mid. Wheels are Mini-Z GPM alloys for the F40.

If I could get the rear of my Kawada sorted, then I wouldn't need to stuff the electrical stuff into my Z chassis... Where did you get those Steering arms, they look a lot stronger than the little posts that came with the Kit..

the motor mount and h-plate, are they custom made, or can they be bought? They look like the GPM parts, am i correct?

I reckon the best thing to do is drop the elecronics back into the kawada chassis and get the OL ball diff so I can use mini z wheels all round.


That alcad paint really looks well on those wheels!!

Those are ball and socket joints from the Kawada SP Tie-rod set. I combined them with a Du-Bro Servo Saver.
