Yes, I can't stress enough...patience. If you try to rush the drying time, you might not let the paint settle and even out. If it dries too quickly, it will dry in the state it is put on at first, kinda clumpy. As it's drying, it lays itself on (for lack of better term). Just my 2 cents.

Oh, and by the way.....enough of all this bashing on other's rides!

When i saw the pic. WOW. What can i say. I think the clear coat idea is cool and all but it just doesn't seem worth it now.
Thanx for shareing though. You saved me the trubble of the same mistake. (The clear coat not the heat thing.) You may already know this but some of the mini-z bodys will fit the xmods and they got some cool ones. Most of them are around $20.00. That beats the $50.00 + for another x-mod.

Wow that must REALLY REALLY suck. Do you plan to buy another XMOD or are you just going to drive it without a body?

Well, I have noticed that the paint that comes on these cars tends to repel the paint I use. Nothing a proper sanding, and light solvent wouldn't fix, but I wouldn't blame the plastic.

Your first mistake was mixing Testors and Duplicolor. Testors is Enamel, Duplicolor is laquer. What happened to you, is exactly what happens when you mix enamel and laquer.

Secondly, heat will not speed up the curing process. A warm envirement is beneficial, but straight up hot=bad. Too much heat will melt the paint, make it soft, and it'll never properly cure and get hard the way it should. If you want to speed up the cureing process, put a fan on it. Air circulation is the best way to go.

And lastly, I can't believe you didn't realize plastic would melt, and furthermore it's even more amazing that you can displace the blame from yourself, and blame RS.

the first clearcoat i tried was also enamel and it actually ripped up the paint as it wrinkled, far worse that wut the lacquer did. btw, my black wheels have the same paint and it's coated with the duplicolor clearcoat and it looks great, didn't wrinkle or anything. the first clearcoat i tried worked great on teh front bumper and hood.

and about the mixing thing, well, you live you learn and i learned my lesson

other than my friend suggesting some heat, i seen people on the web talk about warming up their models (non-rc) after they applied their enamel paint.

i knew plastic melts, but i didn't know the plastic that RS used had such a low melting point. i swear it was at most 100 degrees in that oven cuz first, i only had the thing set to below the lowest temperature mark, and second it was in there for 2 minutes at most.

yeah i blame myself for this mistake but i also blame RS for using cheaper plastic. i've seen some fairly cheap plastic get subjected to a direct flame from a lighter and it didn't melt, though the surface did get slightly charred obviously. i think if they didn't do the interchangeable body kits thing, they probably could've put that money into higher quality plastic. but knowing RS, they'd make it this weak anyway so that if you break the body, or in my case, melt the body, your only choice is to get a new kit

You never mentioned what type of paint the color was?

thats true some plastics are stronger and more heat resistant than the RS bodies

but why would you expect them to design it like that?

Neurokinetik's RSX was run over by a car, and the thing still runs fine...... hell he even managed to salvage the body


so why would u want it any stronger than that

stronger=heavier= slower

go try the same thing with a mini Z bodie... i guarantee it melts the same way

wow, what does this mean for people with Xmods that live in flordia? during summer it gets over 100 a bunch of times down there...

and the moral of the story is, if you live in flordia, take up knitting, or some other hobby

Whoops. Don't worry, I think we've all had a "my bad.." moment with our X-Mods. At least you learned not to do that next time. I used to dry some of my Bit paint jobs with a hairdryer with usually bad results, because I wanted to go challenge the downhill (big hill I used to live on) RIGHT THEN and not later..so my first Bit (MS Sport clear S-2000, thats why I bothered painting it..) looked like crap. You definately just gotta wait it out with the paint, but hey, maybe you created your own custom there accidentally, the "I thought I could make that corner!" Supra.

to speed up the cure procress of the paint, use one of those lights used in the construction sites, pass the light from one side to the other until the paint is dry.

the first coat of paint I put on mine melted the body....I had to remove all the paint and sand and polish the plastic to get it smooth so I could try again...but I did it...finally
