Interesting Race Formats

Posted 02-26-2008 at 12:29 PM by MZRSpoon
This concept started as a thread on Mini-Zracer.com. I was just wondering if anyone had any creative race formats for 1 on 1 racing or informal heats when there was no lap timer. I got some really great responses from several forum members.

Sprint Heats (4+ Racers, 5-10 laps)

For Heat 1 the drivers line up in random order. The winner in Heat 1 lines up in last place. The second place driver lines up in first, third place driver lines up second, etc. Basically the previous winner has to work the hardest to get back up to the front. This format rewards the aggressive driver.

Pursuit aka Catch The Last aka Tag (2 Racers)

This works well with two drivers that are close in skill. Both drivers start at the same time and the winner is the first person to lap their opponent 2 or 3 times. With equally matched drivers it could take a while for a winner to prevail and the lead can switch back and forth quite a bit. One variation on this is to try and "Tag" the other driver as you lap them...could get expensive!

Police chase (5+ Racers, 8 is even better!)

Appointed bad guy must make it around 5 times, other drivers can do anything in their power to stop him. (if the bad guy's forward progress stops, he's caught) Head-ons are not allowed, but road blocks are. Real fun with 8 or more willing racers... and beater bodies of course.

Elimination (4+ racers)
Series of 7 lap races... if you lose, you're eliminated from the next race. (not allowed to touch cars, if you wreck, you're out) Real interesting when you get down to the last 2!

Suicide laps (3-10 laps)
Race to the line, turn around and race to the line the other way. Watch for the oncoming traffic! Lap quantity is usually determined by bravery levels and who is left.

Simulation (2+ Racers)
The goal here is to make it as much like real cars as possible. Basically if you even touch a rail or cause contact with another car, you lose and are out of the race. It takes a different approach to driving if you can't crash AT ALL. It slows the driving way down, but the stress and tension is way high.
