Race Prep Part II

Posted 02-16-2008 at 07:48 AM by MZRSpoon
I thought I had given you the total run down in my previous post but I actually thought of a few more things worth checking before you pack your stuff up and head out to the track...mostly chassis suspension.

Suspension

No matter what brand of H-plate you use (Kyosho, Atomic, GPM, DOW special) one thing is for certain, if they break it will be at a time when you don't want it to happen. On the carbon fiber plates you can usually see the fatigue start to set in before the break happens. A quick check near where the center part of the "H" joins the contact points could save you some headache.

I have recently started to use a disk damper and they typically work very well but they do need some cleaning and lubing every once ina while. I just use some paper towel or Q-tips to wipe the excess gunk and relube them with my oil of choice.

Misc

I also like to check any machine screws that I may have on the chassis. Basically anything connected to alloy. I've had some motor mount damper posts loosen up on me in the past.

So, I think that's everything, at least for now.

Here's a quick reference list.

Tires
  • Good amount of rubber
  • Securely glued or taped
Wheels
  • Nuts in good shape
  • No cracks
Body
  • No major cracks
Motor
  • Clean
  • Screwed in tightly
  • Solder points intact
Batteries
  • Matched and charged
Controller
  • Just make sure you have it!
Suspension
  • Not binding
  • Clean
  • Well-lubed
Screws
  • Tight ?

Well, I hope that helps you have a smooth and successful race day. Plenty of races are won an lost due to simple oversights. You've still got to have skills to make the A main, but if you keep you cars in good shape you can spend more time driving and less time tweaking.
