Crafting a Race Body for Your Mini-Z

So you have your race body of choice, either chosen by yourself, with the help of a local racer, or with the help of my blog article last week. Now while you could just glue in the clips, slap it on your car and go racing, there are several things you can do to any body to make it faster, more stable, lighter, stronger, etc., all of which add up to a better racing body.

This week I'm building a new McLaren F1 GTR longtail (the last one got crushed... long story), so I'll cover...

Choosing Racing Bodies for Your Mini-Z

So, Kyosho only makes about a bajillion different bodies for the Mini-Z racer series... this is lovely if you're an avid collector of them (there ARE a lot and they're all pretty), but when you're trying to pick a good racing body it can get pretty overwhelming. So how do you know which one to pick?

1) First see what's allowed within the class of racing you plan to participate in. Some classes, like Mini, only allow certain bodies to be used, and others, like Pan, may only allow one....

Drifting - A Couple Demos

Hi everyone, back to drifting for this week.

So I finally got some time to get some video on Wednesday, and so I recorded a couple examples of me drifting my nearly-stock MA010.

Example 1: Feint drift

As I explained in the drifting guide, a feint drift is a very effective approach to start a drift, if you can get the timing and magnitudes correct. Here's a short clip (click on pic for video):

2WD Magic Parts: Front Wheel Bearing Spacers

One of the largest downfalls to the Mini-Z MR-01/015/02's design is the fact that the front wheel bearings have empty space between them. That is, when installing a wheel, you cannot tighten the nut all the way because that would bind up (and eventually damage) both wheel bearings. But that leaves the front wheels with a very noticeable degree of slop, which makes itself evident in the car's handling. To be able to tighten the nut down, you need a spacer in that empty space to take up the load....

For those of you who've seen RC drifting, you know that good drivers and well-sorted drift cars equals a really beautiful show on the track, sometimes more exciting than races. I've done a good bit of work in the last 4 years to nail down the setup and driving technique, so this week I'll share what I know about drifting the Mini-Z MA010 and hopefully I can get some video for you guys during the week with my newest drift car.

So, onto the tutorial.
